Recorded as early as 1837 in Pennsylvania and still common at roadside stands in late summer. Ground Cherry fruits are 1/2" to 3/4" in diameter and are encased in a papery husk that turns brown when the fruits are ripe. Excellent flavor, notes of pineapple, strawberry and grape with a touch of tomato. It can be used for preserves and pies, over ice cream or in fresh fruit salads. Let them ripen fully to develop their flavor.

Stunning! The color is unusual - lavender and purple stripes, turning to olive-green, red, and brown/blue stripes when fully ripe. Fruit holds well on the vine. Crack-resistant and very sweet! Wispy foliage looks delicate but belies these plants' vigor and productivity. These range in size from a large grape to plum-sized. another that is best to wait until fully ripe. These are cool!

Truly black-blue cherry tomato variety. Fruit skin ripen to a deep purple-blue in sunlight. The lower part of the tomato changes to a deep red color. Dusky blue-green stems and foliage.

We grew these last year and I loved their coloring. The flavor, when allowed to ripen fully, was very sweet.

Unripe fruits start off green with purple anthocyanin slashes and purple spotting. As it ripens it turns a rusty red on the bottom and shades of black with spots and flecks that almost give it a 3 dimensional look. Very productive, 1-3 oz. fruits.

This is the most unusual variety you'll ever grow! Fully ripened fruits are bright green, with stripes of a still lighter green. Round, smallish, 2 to 4 oz. fruits have an excellent, tart, "real tomato" flavor. Plants are vigorous.

If you like your tomatoes not too sweet and very firm, this one is for you.

A cross between Indigo Rose and a red cherry tomato. The unripe green fruit, 2 to 4 ounces, will show lots of purple, brought on by sunlight, but will eventually turn almost a purplish black. Excellent sweet tomato flavor when allowed to fully mature for best flavor.

These have the same striking dark blue anthocyanin coloration over red flesh as Indigo Rose. Yield and flavor are much improved, with larger clusters of 1-2 oz. fruit. These are very sweet when ripe. Wait for them to develop an reddish tint for best flavor.

New in 2016 from Brad Gates, Wild Boar Farm. Fruits resemble a mini beefsteak with flattened shoulders. As with most of the tomatoes developed by Brad Gates,these meaty fruits have amazing colors. They have a goodly amount of anthocyanin.

A selection from Brad Gates, Wild Boar Farm. These 5 to 12 oz fruits start yellow with purple black shoulders and ripen to orange with indigo shoulders. The inside is yellow/orange with red mottling. They have a wonderful, sweet, low acid flavor. Beefsteak type, meaty with few seeds.

Large  fruits are the color of port wine with metallic green stripes and weigh 8 to 12 oz. Their color is amazing. The last time we grew this one, it was a bit shorter than what I expected from an indeterminate.  Very compact.

The true queen of black tomatoes, this richly flavored salad type variety hails from the Rhine region of Germany. The round, 3 to 3.5 oz. fruit develop brushstrokes of ebony, crimson and orange; cut into the fruit to reveal a stunning vermillion color, fragrant, sweet and loaded with rich tomato taste! Plants are indeterminate, with a compact habit, reaching 5 to 5.5 feet on average, with blue-tinged, regular leaf foliage.

This one is here instead of being allocated to the heirloom category, instead it is in the unusual category due to it's beautiful, ferny foliage. An heirloom that ripens early and produces large crops of red fruit averaging 2-3"across with a slightly flattened shape and a pleasant, taste. The compact plants make great container plants. We were impressed with this one. Russian origins.

Just perfect for container growing or smaller gardens. Plants grow no more than 18 inches tall and can be grown in a 6-inch pot. Round, bright red cherry tomatoes are about 3/4 inch in diameter.

A  ping pong ball sized tomato that seems like an average yellow tomato until you slice it open. The inside is a striking ruby color which is reminiscent of a ruby red grapefruit. Short plants produce quite a bit fruit. Sweet and mild. We loved this one!
